Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Among many other things he was the first to demonstrate that lightning comprises electrical charges. In 1752 Franklin supposedly ventured into a storm to fly a kite. He was holding a silk ribbon with a kite at one end and an iron key at the other. Lightning struck the kite and a charge travelled down the silk ribbon to the metal key. Franklin touched the key and was zapped, thus proving the electrical nature of lightning!
